Staterra’s contributions to a safer industrial sector

In Saudi Arabia’s dynamic industrial landscape, process safety is of paramount importance, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of industrial processes is crucial not only for economic growth but also for safeguarding human life and the environment.

One such critical system is the ReCAP™ Emissions Recovery System, designed to prevent the release of harmful gases into the atmosphere.

Understanding the ReCAP™ System and the importance of HAZOP studies

The ReCAP™ system operates under high pressure, transferring gases between closed volumes to minimise environmental impact. Given the potential risks involved, a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study was conducted to proactively identify and address potential hazards within the system.

This systematic approach, aligned with SAEP-104, involved a multidisciplinary team of experts, including Staterra, a leading environmental consulting firm with expertise in risk assessment and process safety management.

Staterra’s key contributions to the HAZOP study

Staterra played a pivotal role in facilitating the HAZOP workshop and guiding the risk assessment process.

Our team of experienced consultants, Amer Alzubaidi and Haitham Al Mamimi, brought valuable insights and technical knowledge to the table, contributing significantly to the identification and evaluation of potential hazards.

They actively participated in discussions to ensure a comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the system’s safety and operability.

Additionally, the team utilised a customised Excel sheet that aligns with the HAZOP template given in SAEP-104 to record all discussions during the HAZOP workshop session, further ensuring compliance and efficiency.

Key findings and recommendations from the HAZOP report

The HAZOP study, conducted in collaboration with Bell Energy, identified several potential hazards within the ReCAP™ system. These hazards were meticulously assessed based on their potential risk ranking, considering both the severity of potential consequences and their likelihood of occurrence. Among the high-risk hazards identified were:

  • Loss of CNG supply, leading to potential equipment damage
  • Gas diversion, posing a risk of fire and explosion
  • Overpressurization, with the potential for catastrophic failure and gas release

To mitigate these risks, the HAZOP team, with Staterra’s active involvement, developed six prioritised recommendations. These recommendations include evaluating set points, implementing car-seal closures on valves, and ensuring that critical valves remain in their designated positions to prevent unauthorised operation and gas diversion.

Staterra’s expertise in action: ensuring safety and compliance

Staterra’s expertise in process safety management was evident throughout the HAZOP study. Our contributions helped ensure that the risk assessment was conducted in a thorough, systematic, and compliant manner.

Staterra’s commitment to excellence and in-depth understanding of industry best practices were instrumental in developing effective recommendations to enhance the safety and reliability of the ReCAP™ system.

The ReCAP™ Emissions Recovery System HAZOP Report highlights the critical importance of proactive risk assessment in complex industrial processes. Staterra is proud to have made significant contributions to this study, underscoring our capabilities in process safety management and our commitment to supporting clients in achieving environmental excellence. Through collaborative efforts and a data-driven approach, we have helped pave the way for a safer and more sustainable industrial sector in Saudi Arabia.
