What are HAZOP studies?

Hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies might sound complex, but they are crucial for identifying potential hazards and operational issues in various systems. When do we use them?

That’s exactly what a HAZOP study aims to do.

It involves examining every part of a process to detect deviations from the intended design or operation that could lead to hazardous situations or operational problems. By spotting these risks early, companies can implement measures to prevent accidents, reduce downtime, and improve overall safety and performance. They’re a failsafe, a proactive tool to protect staff and the public.

How do HAZOP studies work?

The magic of HAZOP studies begins with careful preparation. The scope and objectives of the study are defined, and a multidisciplinary team with expertise in the process being examined is assembled. Relevant documentation, like process flow diagrams and operating procedures, is gathered. 

The scope depends on the size and complexity of the company and the processes involved, but however big or small, we next break the project down into manageable sections, known as nodes.

Each node represents a specific part of the process; a piece of equipment, or a pipeline segment. Key parameters for each node, such as flow, temperature, pressure, and chemical composition – whatever is relevant – are identified.

Guide words like “No,” “More,” “Less,” “As Well As,” and “Reverse” are applied to each parameter to explore the possibilities, or deviations. For example, applying the guide word “No” to the parameter “flow” could lead to the deviation “No flow.” 

Each step in the process branches out to explore different potential deviations and their causes and consequences. It’s similar to how a logic tree would map out different pathways and outcomes based on various conditions: ‘if this is like that, what will happen?’

We then analyse each of these deviations to figure out possible causes and consequences. What could go wrong? Why might it happen? What impact could it have? We assess the likelihood and severity of each identified hazard, helping us prioritise risks and decide which ones need immediate attention.

Next, we come up with recommendations to mitigate the identified risks. This might involve design tweaks, changes to operating procedures, or additional safety measures. Finally, we document all our findings and recommendations in a detailed report, and follow up to make sure the recommended actions are put in place and are effective.
